How to win the homework struggle
News Canada
(NC)—September is around the corner and once again parents will face the ongoing struggle with their children over homework. Never easy at the best of times, the battle over homework can be particularly tough—for parents and kids alike—just after summer vacation.
Dr. Andrea Pastorok, an Educational Specialist with Kumon Math & Reading Centres, offers some tips for easing the transition into a healthy homework routine:
• Homework is often the first academic challenge your children encounter. Develop a consistent homework routine early in the school year to help your children keep up and learn effectively beyond the school day.
• Set aside a common study time at home for studying, reading and quiet activities, and do your best to avoid arguments during that time. Encourage children not to cram in homework just before bedtime.
• Schedule time to help your children by answering their questions, explaining concepts, extending lessons and proofreading papers, reports and projects.
• Think ahead and plan for predictable challenges. If your child struggles with a subject, secure additional help early on, before a problem becomes insurmountable.
• With younger children, start by checking what is in their school bags during the first month of school and help them keep their materials neat and organized.
• If there is no assigned homework, encourage your children to use their designated daily homework time to read a book, study or review.
Creating a homework routine that works for both parents and children will help keep after school activities organized and will ultimately contribute to harmony in the home.
