Career opportunities in the booming wellness and spa industry
News Canada
(NC)—The wellness and spa industry in North America is growing tremendously and so are the career opportunities in spa management for well-trained individuals.
According to a 2002 PricewaterhouseCoopers survey, commissioned by the International Spa Association (ISPA), approximately 1,300 individual spas exist in Canada, with over half (56%) of them in Ontario, followed by 17% in British Columbia. It also revealed that the North American spa industry saw an 87% increase in the total number of employees over the two years preceding the survey. To put the recent growth of this US$10.7 billion industry in perspective, North Americans now spend more money at spas than they do at amusement parks, movie theatres or ski resorts.
The driving force behind this tremendous growth is booming consumer demand…literally! Total spa visits in North America grew 71% between 1999 and 2001, primarily by aging and health conscious "Baby Boomers". And as the average retirement age climbs, so does the demand for spas providing stress-relieving treatments. All signs point to continued robust growth in this industry for years to come.
With this rapid industry expansion, skilled, reliable and well-educated spa management personnel are in high demand, not just in North America but also worldwide. "Today's market demands more creative, highly skilled and well-rounded spa managers and leaders who have the ability to educate and empower both clients and staff", notes Jack Morrison, Executive Director of Toronto's Elmcrest College of Applied Health Sciences & Spa Management.
As Canada's top institute for wellness and spa education, Elmcrest College prepares students to become the qualified, highly skilled, job-ready spa management personnel in demand by premier spas today. Elmcrest's Faculty of Spa Management is now accepting applications for its new full-time Spa Management Programs starting in September 2003 in Toronto.
