The Secrets to Skin-Friendly Shaving
Metro Services
(MS) - Shaving is important, but it can be a hated, time-consuming, often painful event. Most men and women see shaving as a chore, but there are a few simple steps you can take to make it a more skin-friendly experience, according to Larry Fishman, president of Majestic Drug Co., Inc.
While quick to use, electric razors are very often harsh on the skin and tend to pull the hair. A wet shave, using a brand new razor, is by far the best way to get a close shave that will be kind to the skin.
Make sure the stubble or hair is thoroughly wet to soften and swell the hair. Use warm water to open the pores.
Ensure that your shave preparation (oil, gel or foam) is thoroughly massaged into the stubble or hair. Lather is irrelevant - lots of foam does not mean a better shave.
Use a razor with a sharp clean blade. The blade should be cleaned before each shave. Men should change blades weekly.
Shave in the same direction as the hair growth. Shaving against the direction of the hair growth is the primary cause of razor burn, redness and rashes.
Shave slowly using short strokes and rinse the blade often in hot water. Do not press too hard, especially around sensitive areas, such as the neck or bikini area.
In case of minor nicks or cuts, stop the bleeding immediately with new, individual Kutkit Styptic Swabs, the only sanitary styptic product available.
Finish by rinsing off excess cream or oil with cool water. Ideally, use a toner afterwards to remove any residue, close the pores and refresh the skin.
